E55 National Energy demonstration (Nationale Energie Manifestatie)
09-03-1955 - 18-05-1955
The second post-war reconstruction exhibition.
The Dutch Queen Juliana performed the official opening of the second post-war reconstruction exhibition on 18 May 1955. Rotterdam was a ‘source of inspiration’ for the resurrecting nation. There was a national ambition in those days to present the Netherlands in an international perspective. Numerous businesses showed their new inventions and products. The manifestation included experimental television broadcasts, and visitors could enjoy an aerial view of the exhibition by cable lift. Karel Appel created a hundred metre long wall painting and Mies Bouwman made her first appearance on television. When E’55 closed its doors on 3 September it had attracted 3 million visitors.
