Dolls played an important role in play and tradition within the Ancient Greek and Egyptian culture. They were often made out of a variety of different materials such as wood, bone and ivory.  In addition to this, they were often painted  and dressed to resemble human beings even down to the addition of hair from animals. In fact, it is believed that many of these dolls resemble the dolls of today.

It was custom to bury the toys of a dead child with the body; and it is owning to this custom, carried on in unbroken succession from the remostest times in Egyptian history. It is because of these customs that we now have these playthings to study and examine as past tombs are uncovered.
