Technological Advancements in Medicine
The earliest form of medicine came in the form of herbal remedies that were able to cure ailments, soothe fevers, and reduce aches and pains. Eventually, the Egyptians and other pre-historic cultures, began experimenting with surgery; there have been mummies found with holes in their heads, but with healing in the bones surrounding the wounds. Then came scientific inquiry into the human anatomy and discovering how the pieces worked together to form the body. Later on, acupuncture – which has been around for centuries – began making a name for itself in the treatment of pain and as an anesthetic. Through trial and error, we now have a working knowledge of cells, tissue, complex organ systems, and a wide range of science and technology available to treat every part of our anatomy. This timeline shows a few of the important events that have laid the foundation of modern medicine and where we are at now.
